Over the last several months and weeks, there has been more and more reporting of the register and drop scheme. Where organizations register domains, and mostly are domains with incorrect spelling. How many versions of a domain are there of your domain?
This has been reported on by Bob Parsons, CEO of Godaddy.com on his personal website, he refers to it as domain kiting. Basically, it’s like going to the store buying a 1gb flash card, using it and deleting everything off of it, and then returning it in the return time of 7 days…
Well in a domains case it’s a 5 day refund policy, for example you spelled the domain wrong, and then said oops… At the moment this is being abused to the tune of about 35 million domains a month as of march.
Discussion from what people are saying is that they should get rid of the refund policy. In many respects I would agree, and disagree at the same time. There are people that do make legitimate mistakes in spelling a domain name because they were in a hurry. Then there are those that take advantage of the system and the rules that have not been updated with the times.
ICANN, this is an organization that is still under the direction of the US, Department of Commerce. Now if it were a democratic organization, it would not be under their control but would be made up of people world wide in a complete and true democracy.
As it is domains on the .com level are running out because of the current rules that are in place, for TLD’s and how long it takes to get approved to start a new TLD.
How many ALT Root Servers have sprung up because of the way ICANN runs itself, and how it tightly controls the creation of TLD’s and how much it costs to put forth an application to just get the application process started. From what I read ICANN has outlived its usefulness and its ability to move with the times.
Currently there is an ICANN fee of twenty-five cents per registration of a domain. ICANN could say no refund on that twenty-five cent fee, and that would solve allot of problems. How long will it take for them to take action???
IS ICANN truly the right organization to run the show? Should the internet, not be run wholly and solely by the world, instead of one country? And still today several of the Root servers are run by the US Gov’t, for what purpose to what end? Stability or data mining?
For example, if I was Ford Motor Company, and I wanted to have my own TLD, .ford (dot FORD), Why not? If I wanted to check out the info on a Ford Focus, would it not be easier if I typed in www.focus.ford, and boom I am now at the web site for the ford focus.
It would be good if we had this level of TLD’s, but at the current way ICANN is running the show, getting a new TLD any time soon, would be few and far between.
